Darris Academics

Closing foundational gaps in Literacy and Numeracy for students whose academic performance does not yet match their intellectual potential.

Overview

Led by Dr. Teyuna Darris (Ph.D. in Communication, Certified Elementary Educator), Darris Academics provides specialized, high-intensity remediation for students in Grades 1-8 aligned with rigorous state and national academic standards. We specialize in serving students with average to above-average intelligence who are currently performing below grade level.

Our “Virtual Analog” Methodology

Our unique approach combines synchronous online instruction with required physical paper-and-pencil work. This methodology is designed to rebuild the brain-hand connection essential for deep retention and cognitive growth.

Professional Note: We provide specialized intervention using Tier 1 and Tier 2 evidence-based curricula. We do NOT offer standard homework help; our focus is strictly on skill remediation aligned with research-backed academic frameworks.

Areas of Specialized Support

1. Literacy Intervention (Reading & Writing)

  • Targeted Support: Ideal for students with foundational gaps in reading and written expression, including those with mild characteristics of Dyslexia (only) or Dysgraphia (only).

A. Reading Intervention

  • The Five Pillars: Instruction covers Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.
  • Strands of Proficiency: We emphasize Decoding, Verbal Reasoning, Syntactic Awareness, Background Knowledge, and Metacognition.
  • Methodology: We utilize UFLI Foundations and CKLA to ensure equity and excellence for every student.

B. Writing Intervention (Written Communication & Penmanship)

  • Handwriting Mechanics: We explicitly teach letter formation to automaticity using physical paper and pencil to reduce cognitive load.
  • The Encoding Nexus: Physical writing is used to reinforce sound-symbol correspondences, building robust neural pathways for accurate spelling.
  • Syntactic Expression: We utilize sentence dictation and expansion strategies to deepen the connection between thought and the written word.

2. Mathematics Intervention

  • Standards Alignment: Fully aligned with NCTM Standards.
  • Content Pillars: Instruction covers Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis & Probability.
  • Methodology: We utilize Zearn Math and the CRA Framework (Concrete-Representational-Abstract) to ensure students build new knowledge from active experience.

Inclusions & Professional Reporting

Every enrollment includes a commitment to transparency and data-driven growth. We provide:

  • Diagnostic Assessments: Establishing a clear baseline for the Personalized Learning Plan.
  • Data-Driven Progress Monitoring: Monthly reports that include standardized metrics such as Penmanship Legibility (formation, size, spacing) and Writing Speed/Fluency (WPM) compared to grade-level norms.
  • Formative Assessments: Weekly data points captured through “Virtual Analog” work to track the trajectory toward state-mandated benchmarks.
  • Monthly Conference: One dedicated Parent-Student-Teacher Conference each month to review growth and adjust goals.
